A full day in Arnhemland! Arnhemland was given over to the Aboriginal people over 50 years ago by the Australian Government.
After departing Jabiru our first stop after crossing the East Alligator river into Arnhemland is Red Lilly Billabong. Then it's off to Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) to have a sneak preview of the Aboriginal artists doing their thing at the award winning Injalak Arts and Craft Centre. Our local Aboriginal guide joins us for the adventure up the magical Injalak Hill (Long Tom Dreaming).
This hill was made famous by Baldwin Spencer. He was the first man to commission 200 paintings from the region around 1911-1912. He also, in conjunction with Paddy Cahill, named the region Kakadu (a misappropriation of a Gagudju word). This hill has excellent examples of rock art, and the view across the floodplains and around the escarpment is visually stunning. We farewell our Aboriginal guide at Injalak Arts and Crafts centre, and there is time to browse or purchase the local artists work on display.
Rock art in this area depict the living record of Aboriginal history and culture with hand stencils, stick like mimi figures, x-ray art and many more. These paintings illustrate the daily spiritual lives of Aboriginal people over thousands of years.
This afternoon we have exclusive access into the heart of Minkinj Valley. First enjoy a fresh picnic lunch and billy tea in the shade by the billabong while gazing at the escarpment surrounded valley. See wild brumby horses, birds too numerous to mention, perhaps a saltwater crocodile before enjoying an easy hike to the top of Hamish Dreaming. Return Jabiru late afternoon.
If an area is inaccessible then a suitable alternative will be offered.
