Ever wondered what a fossil actually is? What to look for and how to identify one? This is a discovery adventure with a difference. A hands on 2 day fossil dig with a qualified palaeontologist who will help you to understand this incredible job of tracing back lifeforms millions of years old.

Bathurst Central NSW / Orange New South Wales

Two days - tours leave Bathurst at 8:00am on the first day and return to Bathurst the following day at 6pm. Most of the fossil sites are near Canowindra, a small town southwest of Bathurst. Overnight accommodation at the Riverview Motel in Canowindra. Pick up from Sydney / Canberra by arrangement.

Maximum 6 participants.

This tour is suitable for people aged between 5 and 95 as long as they are reasonably fit as this tour involves some walking on uneven terrain. Comfortable walking shoes and clothing to suit the season. Bring some old clothes to work in and a set of clean clothes for the evening. The Central West is generally very hot in summer and very cold in winter. But don't count on it, we have had frost in January and hot days in winter. It is best to be prepared for all eventualities.

This tour offers an opportunity for participants to tag along with a palaeontologist. Visit a number of different fossil sites, help dig up fossils and learn how palaeontologists go about solving some of the problems that confront them when collecting fossils. Visit several fossil sites in the Central West of NSW. At Canowindra visit the world famous fish fossil deposit, and a few kilometers to the south dig up complete fish fossils at a quarry which was once used to supply road base for the region. Learn how and where to find fossils; how to collect them and how to make proper records of your finds. Learn how to identify them and how to make casts. Take a closer look at the rocks in which the fossils occur and with the help of your guide learn to interpret the fossil sites. Work out what kind of environment the now fossilised lifeforms used to live in, what the climate was like and what the now fossilised creatures might have eaten. Compare the different fossil sites with modern ecological niches. This tour includes: Hands-on activities, exciting discoveries, fine foods and fine wine and overnight accomodation staying at the Riverview Motel, which is the only **** motel in Canowindra.
