Sea Kayaking Day Tour - Vic (Williamstown)

Escape across the bay from one land mass to another. Cross the shipping channel, experience the activity of the Melbourne Port and then relax in beautiful Williamstown for lunch before returning. This is day trip is suitable for beginners and offers a unique perspective of the city from the water.

The experience lasts 6 hrs in total. Start at 9.30 am and finish at 3.30pm. Minimum group number 4. Available everyday although the most popular days are weekends. The trips run on demand, so a person could wait up to 1 month. The average is about 2 weeks. Most popular months are October to April.

We require a minimum of 4 people to run each tour. Please note: if booking for a weekday, you will need to have at least a group of 4 people. On weekends, we can accept individuals or couples as we usually have the minimum numbers required. We have a maximum of 12 people per tour.

Participants must be reasonably active and over 14 years of age (for insurance purposes). People with bad backs, broken arms and legs, wrist injuries or dislocated shoulders should not attend. Participants must be able to swim 50 metres non stop. Bring bathers, thermal top or "rashy", water bottle, wet suit boots/old runners or sandals (not thongs). Spray jacket, thermal top, PFD and spray deck are supplied. The trip depends on good weather conditions, particularly the strength of the wind and the effect on wave and swell size. Trips will be cancelled if the forecast is for 20 knots or above. Staff will contact participants 2 days before hand to confirm go ahead. Cancelled trips will be rescheduled.

Your experience begins with a short discussion on the format for the day including lunch break, distance expected to paddle, and weather conditions. You are then kitted up with a PFD, spray deck, paddle jacket, thermals and a paddle before the all important safety briefing including a dry capsize drill. Once you have done a few warm up stretches you will be paired up into paddling partners. Most sea kayaks are double sea kayaks (Pittaraks) with a couple of single kayaks available for the more experienced paddlers in the group. After going though some basic strokes for 30 - 60 minutes (depending on the skill level of group), you'll set out on the adventure paddling as one group. Commentary on environmental features and local history is provided. Sights that may be seen along the way include dolphins, seals, sea eagles, commorants, fish, boat wrecks, historical buildings, marinas and yachts. Lunch and drinks are prepared for all participants about half way through the trip. The group then returns to the start, gear is packed away and you can change into some warm clothes. Ferries depart to Tasmania at the Station Pier while container ships travel under the West Gate Bridge on route to delivering their cargo to the Melbournian docks. You are able to paddle across this area from Port Melbourne to Williamstown and observe where the mouths of the Yarra and Maribyrnong mix into the sea. Williamstown has a fascinating maritime history that can be explored if time permits.

Customers need to sign an indemnity form and medical form before they commence the trip. Dry bags are supplied for camera equipment and mobile phones. All staff have a sea kayaking guide or instructor's qualification, level 2 first aid or wilderness first aid and at least 5 years experience.
